Arguello Law Firm Raises Awareness for Breast Cancer

If you’ve tuned into an NFL game recently, you may have noticed the athletes adorning hot pink shoes, socks, towels, and other paraphernalia and thought to yourself, when did male athletes start wearing pink? Is this some sort of fashion trend I’m not aware of? Well, fortunately or unfortunately, it’s not a fashion statement, but rather, a statement for a much larger, and more important cause: breast cancer awareness.

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness month. The cold, hard truth is that breast cancer is the second most common cancer diagnosed in women. Approximately one in eight women will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime. Many think that breast cancer may be genetic; however, 85% of breast cancer diagnoses occur in women who have no family history of breast cancer.

In 1991, the Susan B. Komen foundation launched the symbol of the pink ribbon at a marathon for raising awareness about breast cancer. Since then, the pink ribbon has been linked to raising awareness for breast cancer. And the campaign is working! Since Susan B. Komen Foundation launched its campaign, the mortality rate for those who die due to breast cancer has been steadily decreasing, with the largest decrease found in women under the age of 50. The best and most important thing you can do is to get an annual mammogram if you are a woman, over 40 years old.

As many of our readers know, AHA proudly supports various charities through our Casual Friday for Charity days. This week, we proudly donate to and support the efforts to raise awareness about breast cancer seen all throughout the country. In honor of this, many AHA members wore pink today and adorned the symbolic pink ribbon.
