Federal Jury Awards $9 Billion in Actos Defective Drug Trial

by Omar Malik

In a landmark case against Takeda Pharmaceutical Co. and partner Eli Lilly & Co., a federal jury in Lafayette, LA. found for the plaintiff, awarding $1.5 million in damages and $9 billion in punitive damages against the defendants. At the heart of this case was evidence that the defendants knew that their drug greatly increased the risk of, or even caused, development of bladder cancer. Even with this knowledge found during clinical trials almost 7 years ago, they continued to market and sell this dangerous drug.

The top 10 Big Pharma companies have reaped a total of almost 700 billion dollars over the past 10 years in profit alone. This industry has become more about shareholder profits than about helping people and finding cures. These types of verdicts go a long way towards showing them it is not OK to play games with peoples health.
