Hail Storm Pummels North Texas

by Nishi Kothari

Yesterday afternoon, catastrophic storms swept through North Texas, as heavy rain, large hail, and tornadoes touched down upon the Decatur – Denton area. The storm started at 3 pm on Thursday and lasted throughout the night. Residents in the Denton area sought shelter as the softball-sized hail wreaked damage on homes and businesses alike. Jesse Moore, a meteorologist in Fort Worth, noted 82 mph wind near the Denton airport. The National Weather Service reported that the hail was 3.5 inches in diameter.  Officials at the University of North Texas sent live updates via Twitter to its students of tornado sirens and large hail, advising all to “take cover, and be safe.” Texas Women’s University in Denton already suffered broken windows in three of its buildings.

At 8 pm, a tornado touched down in Collin County and moved towards the City of Greenville. By 8:26 pm, the Greenville Police Department issued a statement that a tornado had touched down just north of Greenville. A separate batch of storms formed in the Brownwood area, and baseball-sized hail was reported last night in Parker County.

Many homeowners in the North Texas area will rely on their insurance company to cover the costs of repairs. However, too often insurance companies either deny claims completely or do not give nearly enough compensation for homeowners to recoup their losses from natural disasters beyond their control. If an insurance company fails to give you adequate compensation or denies your claim, you likely have grounds to file suit.
