Illegal Immigration is an Act of Love

by Martin Arguello

Those were the words of former Florida Governor Jeb Bush.  And, wow, has he caught a lot of flak for it from anti-immigrant folks.

Politics aside—I neither hate nor love Jeb Bush—the former Gov has a point.  Instead of spouting hateful rhetoric, our politicians should be seeking a sensible, comprehensive, and compassionate solution to illegal immigration.  Illegal immigrants come to this country for a variety of reasons—not just financial.  And, people should have a chance to share in and become a part of our great nation.

I am, myself, the child of initially illegal immigrants.  My mother eventually became a US citizen, and my father eventually went back to his home country of Nicaragua.  My parents first came to the US legally, as students at Louisiana State University.  In fact, I was born in Baton Rouge while they were in college.  Shortly after that, they moved back to Nicaragua… but, we eventually had to flee that country due to a communist revolution.  Unfortunately, my parents were not able to get political asylum.  However, consider the ramifications of them having come here as illegal immigrants.  My mother got a job in a camera store.  Eventually, she became a citizen and now teaches elementary school, including bi-lingual classes (some of them children of illegal immigrants).  My father started a pest control business which generated jobs.

I worked my way through high school and college, and I eventually started this law firm.  At points I’ve employed almost forty people… I think it’s clear that my parents’ illegal immigration has been a net gain for this country.

The Bush family has a history of supporting immigration.  Again, politics aside, I admire their compassionate stand on this issue, and the hate mongers should remember that aside from Native Americans, we are all descendants of immigrants.
