A Maine woman won $7.65 million in a medical malpractice lawsuit after a hospital technician failed to diagnose her cervical cancer. The verdict was one of the largest in the state’s history. A Florida woman won a $23 million verdict after poor treatment during her pregnancy contributed to her daughter’s birth defects. The victim and her attorney sought $52 million in damages due to the extent of the girl’s disabilities.

Details of the Maine Medical Malpractice Lawsuit

Minot resident Ruth Hricko, 63, filed her medical malpractice lawsuit against the Central Maine Medical Center in September 2013. Ms. Hricko had complained of abdominal pain during her annual physical checkups from 2008 to 2011. Her physician had taken tissue samples and placed them on slides for a technician to examine. The medical malpractice lawsuit alleged that the hospital’s technician failed to read slides properly and misdiagnosed her eventual cervical cancer.

Cancer Diagnosis Prompts Medical Malpractice Lawsuit

By 2011, according to the medical malpractice lawsuit, Ms. Hricko had developed stage 3 cervical cancer. Her suit alleges that, if the technician had read the slides properly, her cancer would have been diagnosed early and removed in its early stages. The medical malpractice lawsuit verdict also included a $2 million award for Ms. Hricko’s husband, Michael Hricko. A spokesman for the hospital said that their attorneys would “review options for next steps with respect to this case.”

Iala Suarez sued Dr. Michael Coffey and Peace River Medical Center, alleging that the doctor was negligent in his treatment of her high-risk pregnancy. Ms. Suarez’s pregnancy contributed to her high blood pressure and protein in her urine. The medical malpractice lawsuit also alleges that Ms. Suarez’s lack of proper treatment led to her daughter being born with crippling brain damage.

Florida Medical Malpractice Lawsuit Verdict Falls Short

The jury in the medical malpractice lawsuit found that Dr. Coffey was 70 percent at fault, while the hospital held 30 percent of the blame. Ms. Suarez and her attorney sought $52 million in damages, largely to cover the child’s continuing medical care. According to Ms. Suarez’s attorney, the daughter’s disabilities are so severe that she will never be able to live independently and will require around-the-clock care for the rest of her life. Dr. Coffey announced that he would appeal the medical malpractice lawsuit verdict.
