Storms Drive Up Homeowners Insurance Claims

by Martin Arguello

Wild weather patterns are expected to drive up homeowners insurance claims across the country. Winter storms in New England, some of which dropped a foot or more of snow across the region, are expected to produce a record number of homeowners insurance claims. The melting snow may also produce a high number of flood and water damage claims. In Oklahoma, tornadoes that struck hundreds of homes are expected to bring thousands of homeowners insurance claims from around the state.

Record Snowfall Brings Record Homeowners Insurance Claims

The winter storms that poured 110 inches of snow on Boston are expected to bring an equally staggering number of homeowners insurance claims. Insurance brokers and adjusters have reportedly been swamped with thousands of homeowners insurance claims across the six-state region. A local news report quoted homeowners citing water damage on their roofs and walls from “ice dams.” Homeowners and business owners across the region have initiated their own repairs, rather than waiting for the long claims process.

New England Homeowners Insurance Claims May Run Into Summer

The report also quoted an insurance adjuster who estimated that the homeowners insurance claims process could continue “well into the summer.” Marc Baron, a public insurance adjuster, advised policy holders to exercise patience as their homeowners insurance claims go through the approval process. However, Mr. Baron also said that the “very large, national” insurance providers will be “conducting business as usual,” as they would be “looking for ways to minimize payments” and “potentially deny claims,” despite the language outlined in their policies.

Oklahoma Expects Thousands of Homeowners Insurance Claims

Moving from the Northeast to the Midwest, Oklahoma residents are also expected to file thousands of homeowners insurance claims after tornadoes ripped across the state. The state’s Insurance Department reported that more than 1,100 homeowners insurance claims have already been filed, with thousands more expected in the coming weeks. The department has also established several help centers to aid residents in filing their claims and understanding the process.

Advice For Homeowners Insurance Claims

The Insurance Department also advises residents looking to file homeowners insurance claims to document their damage. Photos and videos can show the extent of the damage and serve as powerful visual evidence in homeowners insurance claims. The department also recommends that homeowners inspect the credentials of anyone representing themselves as inspectors or adjusters. Homeowners should also follow along with anyone claiming to examine the structural damage, as state investigators have learned that criminals posing as inspectors may commit fraud, theft or vandalism on the property.
