Late Monday evening at an apartment complex in west Houston, a two-year-old boy was taken to the hospital after being bitten by a dog. According to reports the boy suffered cuts to his head and face, when paramedics arrived he was alert and breathing despite early reports that he was unconscious after the incident.

It is unknown what prompted the dog to attack and reports suggest that the dog was a mixed-breed. One witness to the event tried to get the dog off the young boy and the dog soon ran back to its owner’s apartment. The attack is still under investigation.

The Center for Disease Control estimated that 4.5 million people are bitten by dogs each year and more than 800,000 people seek medical assistance for bites. The rate of dog bites is highest among children between the ages of 5 and 9.

It is important to teach children at an early age how to prevent dog bites. The following are a few ways to lower the risk of being bitten.

Do not approach an unfamiliar dog Do not run away and scream from a dog When approached by an unfamiliar dog, remain motionless Avoid direct eye-contact with an unfamiliar dog Avoid playing with a dog unless being supervised by an adult In many cases even if a dog is not provoked, their instinct leads them to bite or nip unsuspecting victims.
