Houston Mayor Speaks Out on Truck Drivers Texting and Driving

by Martin Arguello

Although there is no official ban of texting and driving throughout Texas, Houston Mayor Annise Parker is asking a specific group of people to put their phones away while behind the wheel, truck drivers. “Texting while driving is a growing, critical problem across the United States,” Mayor Parker told MyFox Houston. Coca-Cola has banned drivers from texting and driving for two years, however, the mayor is asking all companies to instill the same policy. Studies have found that texting and driving is just as, or even more, dangerous than drinking and driving. Indeed some Coca Cola drivers who met with Mayor Parker about texting while driving agreed that texting and driving is more dangerous as it is something people do more frequently than drinking and driving. According to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, approximately 5,000 fatal traffic accidents in the United States every year are caused by distracted driving. Additionally, more than 400,000 persons are injured each year in accidents caused by a distracted driver.
