Lamictal: For a Limited Life Only!

by Martin Arguello

With any form of medication that is either prescribed or over the counter, it is quite common for the medicine to possess a wide multitude of side effects. Unfortunately, some are more severe than others. Nevertheless, every person’s body works differently. For example, many children who take Ritalin develop a lack of hunger and loss of sleep. It is no surprise that this ‘treatment’ would end up on a list of defective drugs, along with lamotrigine, more commonly known as Lamictal. Depending on the person, Lamictal is an oral administrative which can be used as an anti-depressant, or at the very least, be prescribed to a person who is diagnosed with bipolar disorder. However, Lamictal’s primary intention is to serve as an anticonvulsant for children who suffer from seizure and for those who have epilepsy. Of course, there are factors that contribute to the side effects, including dosage and the condition that it is being used to treat.

Some of Lamictal’s common side effects include blurred vision, clumsiness/unsteadiness, poor coordination, and skin rash. Along with that, a barrage of other unfortunate occurrences may be found, whether the effects are mental or physical. Two colossal maladies that have apparently stemmed from administering this medicine are Aseptic Meningitis and Stevens – Johnson syndrome. Aseptic Meningitis is the inflammation of the subarachnoid space. This is located within the layers of tissue covering the brain and spinal cord. According to the FDA, “It says that since the drug’s approval in December 1994, and through November 2009, there were 40 cases of aseptic meningitis identified in patients who were taking it. The symptoms were reported to show up within one to 42 days after starting treatment with Lamictal.” Stevens – Johnson syndrome, on the other hand, is a rare disorder where the skin and mucous membranes react relentlessly to a certain medication or infection. It starts out with flu-like symptoms, and then followed by an excruciating red or purplish rash that spreads and blisters, gradually causing the top layer of the skin to cease and shed. Besides these two horrific effects, the FDA stated that Lamictal was named among other anticonvulsants that put first time users at an increased risk of suicide, attempted suicide, and violent deaths.

Consequently, we must act now against the many risks of certain medicines. Although everyone’s body system works differently, there is no harm in speaking up if a pattern emerges. One voice could make an immense difference and save numerous lives from the hazards of defective drugs.
