License Plate Cameras Tracking Drivers Throughout Houston

Throughout Houston, plate recognition cameras are gaining way and becoming a standard tool used by law enforcement officials. Police officers have indicated that they are using these license plate readers as a crime-fighting tool. Of course, these automatic license plate readers are also striking controversy across the nation, as people feel it is invading their privacy. There people may not be too far off, as many police departments are using inconsistent policies and storing all the data these cameras are collecting. Throughout Houston, some local police stations are using license plate readers for surveillance. These police stations include: Sugar Land Police Department – Store information less than 30 days Houston Police Department – Doesn’t store dates and over-written within certain amount of days Pasadena Police Department – Doesn’t store data, transmits to Homeland Security As many may know, these license plate readers may be invading the Fourth Amendment. The American Civil Liberties Union is trying to urge lawmakers and police departments to establish better policies to protect the privacy of its citizens.
