Robo-Calling: We’re Going to the End of the Line!

by Martin Arguello

See if this situation sounds familiar. When you sit down after a long day at work and enjoy a pleasant, quiet meal with your significant other or your family, what tends to break the silence at times? The phone rings. Who tends to call during such an inopportune hour? Usually, it is an unfamiliar company that you have never heard of. Whether the company wants to sell you a product, ecstatically tell you that you have won half a million dollars or a trip to a vacation spot, explain that you owe them an amount of money, or leave an automatic voice message, we can all agree that it is both inappropriate and quite rude.

After the call, we usually tend to ask ourselves two questions: how did this company obtain my phone number and why would they be calling me? There is also a choice that we must keep in mind: should we let these unanswered questions pass us by or should we do something to stop it? To this day, technology has served its purpose with many advantages, providing us with convenience, saved time, and instructions that are quite simple. However, in the field of unsolicited contact, it has left us at a great disadvantage. For a portion of the time, it is not even a live human being on the other end of the line; it is typically an automatic dialer, leaving a pre-recorded message.

Some companies have gone so far out on a limb as to block their number/call, to never reveal any information about who they represent (whether you inquire about it first or not), and even act ill-mannered and unprofessional during a telephone conversation. Some will even hang up for no particular reason. Another change in the modern age is that these companies will not only call during dinner, but in the later hours of the evening and in the brisk hours of the morning before the work day begins. You should write these numbers down whenever you answer the phone and save them. You can also find them in your phone records, along with any other incoming calls that do not seem familiar to you. Unfortunately, a growing number of people have been so bothered by these occurrences that they refuse to answer their landline or cell phone.

Various individuals will let the phone ring and delete whatever message is received. Others will even expect them to happen, like it is a normal part of their every day life.

At Arguello Law Firm, we strive to put a permanent stop to the annoying calls once and for all. We want to encourage people to use their phones once again without living in fear or being used to such an unnecessary bother. If you or someone you know is one of the many victims of annoying or harassing robo-calls, do not hesitate to let us know. Our attorneys will be more than happy to provide assistance and give you the peace that you deserve, plus up to $1500 per illegal call.
